Fred Phelps....

Looks like Fred Phelps is going to picket Heath Ledgers funeral.

"Heath Ledger thought it was great fun defying God Almighty and his plain words...God hates the sordid...bucket of slime known as Brokeback Mountain and he hates all people whatsoever that had to do with it. Heath Ledger is now in hell...and nothing about him is relevant or consequential."

Hrm. Let's play spot the inconsistent statements, shall we?
If it's not relevant or consequential, why picket the funeral?
Is Phelps suggesting that the big sky daddy plopped down $10 to see Brokeback Mountain? That would seem to suggest that God is a fan of the gay-cowboy movies. Interesting...

I've said it before and I'll say it again - I hope that when Phelps dies, there are so many people picketing his funeral and making such noise that the family will have no chance to mourn. I hope that his grave is desicrated and that people stand by the gates to the cemetery, in full view of Phelp's children and grandchildren, with dayglo signs stating that Phelps is a monstrous bigot and asshole.

I've just heard that Heath Legder's family intends to fly him home to Perth for burial. So Mr Phelps and clan might have to save up for their airline tickets.

And considering Australia as a whole was pretty proud of Heath's acting achievements, Does that creep really seriously thinks us Aussies will put up with that shit he gets up to in the States. On second thoughts we might be able to fix up the Rev Phelps and spawn once ance and for all - we'll give him a real nice "Wolf Creek" welcome !

I always thought god was gay...

Hmm, if Heath's body is being sent back to Perth, maybe we should chip in and help Bubba Phelps and his goons get to Austrailia. Somehow I get the feeling we wouldn't need to get them round trip tickets.

Phelp's group was picketing the funeral of a mother and children killed by a drunk driver which was a horrible tragedy.

We don't have a right to free speech in Australia, its an implied right. Phelps would be locked up and then deported, he might not even make it into the country.

I live in Lawrence and was actually excited to have my first Phelps protest sighting last Friday (apparently, God hates the band Kansas. Or the Topeka Symphony Orchestra. Or He's just pissed about rock/classical combinations in general). I've pretty much moved on from being incredibly ticked at them to amused. They looked cold and I kind of wanted to bring them some hot cocoa or something (does God hate warm chocolaty goodness?).

I still think the funeral picketing thing is abhorrent, but at other non-funeral events I welcome them. Such overt bigotry can only hurt their cause and bring me free entertainment.

Besides, "Brokeback" was a FREAKING MOVIE! But Phelps is just like the Islamotards who blow up buildings if they print "offensive" cartoons.

This reminds me of a bumper sticker I once saw: "Every time you see a rainbow, God is having gay sex."

Sometimes I think that Fred Phelps is so far into the closet it's safe to say that he can see Narnia.

No one is that homophobic without some serious ***issues***.

Thanril, god and rainbows, lol...thanks for the chuckle.

I just learned of your blog today and I'm excited to add it to my daily reading!!
However, my hope is that no one thinks Phelps is "consequential" enough himself to merit such an effort as picketing his funeral!

People like Fred Phelps are the price we have to pay to live in a free society. While we vehemently disagree with what he says, ultimately, nobody outside his extended family really cares what he has to say, political candidates don't seek his endorsements. He's just a mentally deranged attention whore.

I don't believe fred phelps is a real person
after all his name is just an acronym of

Fucking

Lesbienism
Praising

When they protested here in Colorado Springs the churches that they protested were warning their members to stay away from them because they are masters at provoking people to violence and then they sue the churches!

He makes me want to vomit.

I've spent a lot of time in cemeteries... I've surveyed over 10,000 graves.

The best thing for this bastard is a simple unmarked grave. They get forgotten REALLY quickly.

No vandalism. No monuments. No martyrs. No MEMORY.

He will be truly DEAD.

Naw, I don't think we should picket or protest Phelps' funeral when he dies. We could throw a party in celebration...or we could just ignore the whole thing as the unimportant speck that he is. "ho hum, Fred's dead. Fred who?"

Hi PM,

I've never commented on your blog before but I've been reading you for awhile and first of all want to compliment you on your writing and your logical thinking. It's refreshing !!

I am glad that you are feeling better from your recent illness!

I was checking out the link left by Lesliepear about Phelps protesting the funeral of the family wiped out by the drunk driver. He actually thinks that because someone sued him for picketing their son's funeral that God took out an entire family in retribution!! What an egomaniac that twisted jerk is to think that any god would wipe out 5 members of a family and injure an infant because someone finally got fed up with his crap enough to sue!!

Reading you is always a pleasure and you are inspiring me to start a blog of my own about my feelings and journey through being an agnostic.

Keep up the great work!!

I don't think it would be right to picket Fred Phelps' funeral. And desecrating his grave would be abominable behaviour. Certainly, Fred Phelps is a Very Bad Man™, but answering his behaviour with the like doesn't seem very ::cough::Christian::cough:: to me. I think the most that can be hoped for Fred Phelps is that one day someone very dear to him comes out of the closet, or something...

Oh, I don't know how big a deal this Phelps nonsense is. Just a lot of talk. Let's move on to more important questions about Mr. Ledger, first and foremost whether Mary Kate Olson is preggers with his kid. Or perhaps he hooked up with both Olson twins. That would be a shocker.

What a sad little git Phelps is, and when he dies he should be treated as such; unmarked grave, no protest - soon forgotten.

phelps is so in the closet!

and if i didn't live so far away, you'd be damn sure to see me picketing his funeral.

I think the main reason Phelps' daughter, Shirley Roper, got a law degree was to see how far they could legally push the envelope. The funny thing is, I don't think anyone can discern their purpose as a group. They insist that we're all doomed to hell, that the "sinful" behavior of some people condemns everyone who is connected to them, even by only the circumstance of shared citizenship. I mean, they're obviously not trying to convert anyone - they offer no hope of "salvation", and don't seem to want to attract converts, so what is this? Group anger management therapy? If they were doing this to get some benefit for themselves it might be somewhat understandable, but all they seem to want is to make everyone feel bad for living in the same country as someone who may have worked with, been friendly towards, related to, or portrayed in public, a gay or otherwise sinful person. It's just stupid.

Phelps is himself a lawyer, and knows precisely how far the envelope can be pushed. The group always stays right on this side of legal.

You dad who works next door to me in the cubicle farm just gave me your URL. I have only read a couple of article but I like it. Maybe Elton John could write a song when Phelps dies. Something like The Bitch is Dead.

I joined a facebook event yesterday -- "I am picketing Fred Phelps' funeral."

But then I deleted the event because they spelled funeral "funnel" -- misspellings are frequent occurrences on FB group/event titles. Of course in real life, I probably wouldn't picket a funeral -- it's nice to picture it, though. . .

AlisonM said...

Tom Foss: I didn't know Phelps himself had a law degree - it's always Shirley Phelps Roper who's appearing in public for the group, so the subject of her legal knowledge was something I'd heard discussed before. Ick. If there's anything worse than a raving fundamentalist, it's a raving fundamentalist lawyer. (/jk. . .I've known plenty of very nice lawyers.)

I don't know if anyone is still watching this thread, but just in case, check this out:
http://www.preachingyourfuneral.com/contact.html

These guys aren't quite Fred Phelps, but they're on the totem pole. There's a video of a "memorial service" held for Heath Ledger, and there's supposed to be one today for Richard Dawkins, and he hasn't even died.
Sickos.
