I hate to do this...

I really, really hate to do this, but... I'm adding a new rule to the blog. In the last two days alone, I've had at least 15 people leave comments or contact me about plugging their new blog on this blog. I've had at least five more leave links to sites that claim to be atheist, but are really theists with a hate message towards atheists. So...for now, if you want someone to read your new blog, comment here and allow your screen name to serve as the link. Chances are, if you get involved on someone's blog as a regular commenter, you'll build connections and your site will gain more traffic. But, for now, if it's your first post here and you're plugging your new site,...I'm deleting your comment. I hate to do this, but...frankly, I'm discouraged and don't have time to go through every new link to make sure the content is something I support. The theists have, unfortunately, ruined it for the other new bloggers. So, like I said - comment here. Let me get to know you and then I'll be less hesitant to yank the links.

P1 was reading here this afternoon and clicked on a link that took her to a porn site. I can't have that. I know this could make me very unpopular in the blogosphere, but I hope you'll see the logic behind my temporary decision. Thank you!

Gee its not like Theists have a track record for being dishonest.

On the other hand you are currently sitting just outside the top ten in the challenge religion rankings.

Did you report the porn pusher?

SWE said...

Yikes. Innocent ol' me, I had no idea people would do stuff like that. grrr. I'm just as glad to have missed the porn link.

I did, I did.
That was quite the eye opener for P1.
The thing is: I do feel bad. I don't mind driving traffic to other people's blogs/ideas/sites. But, when there's a flood of new people pushing all of these blogs,...I have to be careful. With people like you, or any of the multiple people who are regulars here, I trust that you guys would link things that are appropriate or, at the very least, say "mature audiences only". So...my normal posters have little to fear.

P1 was like, "Um. Mom. Ewww."

That sucks! I have had a bunch of those on my personal blog lately too. I just delete them, but I don't have kids to worry about, and I don't really care if the dogs want to look at porn. :)

You have made a smart decision.

SWE said...

I can imagine-ewwwww indeed.

Could be worse. Anonymous could have made you a target. But the porn link thing is still messed up.

And after john's activities, the "Atheist" blogs aren't really much of a surprise.

On that note, I should probably think about new entries for my LJ...

Atheist in a mini van. said...

Steele, I didn't intend to make you a target. When I make a mistake, I can admit it. Your commentary about my son's finger really upset me. Mainly because, well, he's my child and to have someone second guess a decision to get help felt like a dig at my competence. However, I do apologize for hurting your feelings or taking you too seriously.

Saying first that you did the right thing and that I myself can only think of one other thing, (using a clamp configured as a spreader [these for example: link to a standard quick-grip clamp that was there ] to pull the open end apart more) it is kind of misinformed to say "use these even though the offered picture makes it glaringly obvious that they were bad ideas."

I hope I didn't come off as trying to tell you how you should have done it with this post. I was intending that it was more of a statement on how ignorant and inattentive those recommending a chisel/screwdriver, etc. were.

I like that blogger can actually use my LJ name now instead of relying on a link it didn't actually show.

Atheist in a mini van. said...

Ok. Are you tsteele93, too? Or, have I made another mistake?

Atheist in a mini van. said...

Doh!! I had tsteele and steelcobra mixed up. Arg! I need to go to bed.

Well...now I feel bad....I was one of the ones that added to your decision - 1st time commenter, but have been reading and enjoying your blog for some time now, and left my blog address.

I totally understand your reasoning after what your daughter came upon.

However, it was not my intention to plug my blog for viewers, just a way to say hello and introduce myself. I am looking for other bloggers with similar views and would really like getting connected to other atheist moms. It is sad that you had to do that because some people suck and are dishonest.

Sorry to add to your frustration in leading to your decision.

I'm glad you came back. Yes. Unfortunately, you were one of those who got deleted. I'm sure you meant no harm and now, even without the link, people can click on your name and check out what you have to say. As I said above, that's really the best way to make connections and get exposure - participation. :)

I hope you stick around and continue reading.

Your regular readers will still come by and the new visitors can use the link on the name. Don't sweat it, I think you're making the right call.

That's pretty crummy. It's not easy having a new blog, but eventually, readers come trickling in.

I can't believe people would falsely claim to have an atheist blog. Like no one would find out?

But I thought you had an open mind Atheist in a Minivan? Your just another hippocrite who says they would look at any site and sets about deleting the ones you don't agree with.

Elijah,

But I thought you had an open mind Atheist in a Minivan?

Nothing about her actions says otherwise. I don't think you read what she wrote. For instance:

Your just another hippocrite who says they would look at any site and sets about deleting the ones you don't agree with.

But this policy also is in effect for sites she DOES agree with. If you don't believe me, the evidence is right here on this thread. Carla's post was one of the one's deleted, yet, contrary to your baseless accusation, the blog she mentioned is also about atheist parenting. It was not something P-Momma disagrees with.

Actually reading P-Momma's post would have cleared up this issue She writes:

But, for now, if it's your first post here and you're plugging your new site,...I'm deleting your comment.

She does NOT write that she will delete only posts linking to blogs she disagrees with but any post by a new user (not a new theist user but any new user) promoting their blog (any topic) will be deleted.

Your accusation does not hold any water. I can't see how you could have read her post and reached such an inaccurate conclusion. In the future before you make an accusation, you should take the time to make sure that it is valid. Making an accusation without at least checking to see if it is accurate is VERY irresponsible.

Ooooh Elijah. Way to claim that extra place at the table-a charming dinner guest to be sure.

It's spelled "hypocrite" and no, PMomma isn't one. It's her blog so yeah, she can limit links to hate speech and porn.

Glad you stopped by, but please remember to chew with your mouth closed. :)

Ah, Saurian, the polite voice of reason. Thank you-much more constructive than what I just said.

Elijah, your link was misleading. You specifically stated that it was an atheist blog. However, after the first post you linked, it was quite clear that it was a blog about Greek Orthodoxy. Which, given your behavior on other forums that we both post on, isn't surprising. The people at the Californian may be forced to deal with your bonkers crap, but you're not going to have such an opportunity here. I have never, ever come to your blog and pimped this blog. I have more class and propriety.

I'll put it this way with an old internet metaphor:
Linking to a severely hateful page that considers atheits scum, immoral, lost to hell, etc. and calling it something about atheists is much like putting up a link that says cute kittens but actually sends somebody to goatse. (Please, do not google it. You really, really don't want to see it.)

It's an immoral trolling technique that belongs on IRC and 4chan, not here.

I haven't blogged in a long time, but I agree with your decision, Pmomma. If I ever start again I'll let you know.

Glad P1 wasn't too freaked by the site, and that you deleted it. (And that your kids have faith that their mom will protect them from such garbage shows what a good parent you are)

If I don't comment before then....happy new year to you, all your possums, and all the commenters on this blog!!

Aha! I was wondering why there were so many deleted comments! But you gotta do what you gotta do. I set my entire LiveJournal to private because of trolls who had nothing better to do than post porn and insult me and my family. Too bad one of your kids had to see something inappropiate before you could catch it, though.

((This is Music Won't Stop, BTW. I didn't know you could use an LJ ID on here! Yay!))

[silentsanta, NZ]

sorry to see it come to this, but I support your decision.

Isn't it absurd that you (and p#1) even have to deal with this crap? It seems to me as though we humans haven't risen nearly so far from barbarism as we'd like to think :S

Poodles said...

OH Yvette *headdesk* The stupidity doesn't surprise me.

Vamp said...

I can't believe you got stuck with Elijah/Buffoo here on THIS blog, PM.

Stick to the local paper blogs butt fudge.

Atheist in a mini van. said...

It *is* absurd. I am trying to avoid going to screened comments. That, to me, would be worse than simply deleting new commenters with links in the comment. I want there to be a freedom of expression - and it doesn't have to be totally PG (language doesn't concern me)...but, it needs to be honest and non-pornographic.

JP said...

To take the positive of it, at least it shows how popular your blog is! I don't get anything like that.

Mephitis said...

I agree with your decision, sounds very wise. There's no need for people to plug their blogs in comments anyway, since their names link to profiles. I often follow them if I think their comments are interesting (or weird), so it works and it's less pushy.

I'd look at upping parental controls on your internet as well, too, just so that sort of unwanted link following doesn't recur. Although I suppose no system is perfect.

perfectly logical to me PM

Atheist blogging mom here too. Nothing much to plug, just gonna add you to my favorites so I don't feel so lonely out here in the blogosphere!

Sorry you have issues with idiot commentors.
